Proactive Review

I’ll be honest, but it happens to the best of us, I sometimes get duped into buying things that are completely useless, knowing they’re ineffective just because of the pretty package and raving celebrity endorsement.

These are great marketing tactics and they work; unfortunately, it costs more money to the unsuspecting consumer than it does to the marketing company (both financially and emotionally!).

Perhaps it’s the “hope in a jar” syndrome. We’re all looking for the next best thing, the miracle cream to end all wrinkles and I won’t dare say that I’ve stopped looking (oh, it’s out there!), but it’s true that some things just sound better than they are.

Proactive, and this is from personal experience, is one of those things.

I’ve tried Proactive when my acne was at its worse. It went from mild to irritated, scabby and severe. Nothing worked and my parents took pity on me. They got Proactive because it was a new, massively-advertised hype and thought it would help.

I was so excited.

I opened it and washed my face, used the toner, the lotion. I was anxious for the weekend to try the sulphur mask.

I probably looked in the mirror every five minutes expecting a miracle… but it did not come.

It got worse. My skin got drier, more irritated. I kept washing my face, trying new doses. I even called customer service, wondering what I did wrong.

I marched to one of the vendors at the mall selling Proactive and they showed me, with confidence, again and again how to apply it and begged me to give it time.

After a moth I could no longer tolerate the dry, crusted mask that my skin has become and I threw it out. I should have gotten a refund but I was too angered to be logical.

Why I don’t Think Proactive Is Good Choice:

Proactive with its over-drying ingredients and mediocre, basic formulation could very well work for some. I doubt that for people with moderate to severe acne and especially those with sensitive skin it will help at all.

From my experience:

(1) As a system it’s too drying. The toner, the cleanser and the lotion have drying ingredients (benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid) and layering them on top of each other is not the best idea. If your skin is already irritated and red the last thing you need is to try to dry it into submission; it needs nurture, it needs to be pampered and protected!

(2) The cost, with clever selling tactics, might seem miniscule but the fact remains: Proactive’s ingredients are no different than that of AcneFree and ClearZone which are a fraction of the cost. They have almost the same composition, the same ingredients and they even smell and look the same! Try those and see if your acne improves (I doubt it will).

(3) It isn’t balanced. Like I mentioned before, it’s like layering your face with benzoyl peroxide (its effective but you don’t want to use so much that it over-dries your skin!) when your skin needs specific properties to heal. Balance of moisture, of treatments agents and antioxidants will make your skin’s heal and flourish.

(4) Some of us, especially when we have concerns such as acne on our minds, neglect to protect our skin when we go outside. Be it winter or summer, many girls are unaware that their cosmetics are making them even more sensitive to the sun’s damaging rays. Proactive can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so if you do decide to try it please remember to protect your skin with an appropriate SPF!

(5) Lastly: (and this is a hard-earned lesson) the health of your skin is dependant on SO many things and treating it only with topical cosmetics will not produce perfect skin unless your acne is very mild!

You could, like myself, have food allergies and intolerances, your lifestyle might be imbalanced, you could be a smoker or take antibiotics that impair your metabolism and therefore your digestive system… There are many causes and only YOU can get to the bottom of your acne and banish it forever, but only if you’re telling yourself the truth instead of burying it in new, shiny creams and cleansers (I’m so zen…:).

Well, I didn’t get to be this profound that soon.

I actually… tried Proactive a SECOND TIME!

It was when the commercial was on EVERY CHANNEL and people who would see my skin (and had no tact or sensitivity) would give their ignorant advice: “why don’t you try Proactive!?”, as if I was guilty of not taking care of my skin or something.

I was duped again.

I thought, maybe I did it wrong, maybe I used too much, too little; maybe this time it will work… and I bought it again.

It was the same mess.

It smelled, I hated the grainy cleanser, it dried my skin and I dreaded the toner that would dry it even more. The sulphur mask stained my pillows and only made my pimples more inflamed overnight. The lotion… did nothing.

Needless to say. I returned it and promised to change the channel every time it was on (I was especially vulnerable late at night).

The Alternative:

(1) Use a gentle cleanser:

There’s no point in using a benzoyl peroxide cleanser because its effectiveness  is washed after mere seconds so fancy ingredients serve no purpose.

If you’re guilty of the same thing as I was, washing and scrubbing your skin, PLEASE stop! It’ll make matters worse and might even scar your face.

You need a gentle, cheap cleanser for sensitive skin. Preferably a foam cleanser.

(2) Toners Are Not Meant To Tighten:

Toners are not a necessity and most of them are drying (stay clear of the alcohol based ones). I use pure rose-water as a toner. It’s gentle and it makes my skin glow and feel nourished. Any flower water (in its purest form) will do the trick. Or you can juice cucumbers. You can also use Sake or apple cider vinegar (diluted with water) but I don’t like the tightness of the skin afterwards.

(3) Benzoyl Peroxide Never Fails:

Use a cheap, good, water based benzoyl peroxide gel. It’s a classic. If your skin is sensitive only use it on your spots. Another alternative is to spread it all over your skin and moisturize immediately afterwards. Maker sure your moisturizer is not too emollient so it won’t make you breakout.

You can use virgin coconut oil (just a drop), I promise it won’t make you breakout or look greasy.

(4) Give it time:

Relax. Fretting, picking or worrying won’t help. You’re doing the best you can, you just have to wait for your skin to heal. If it’s irritated you have probably treated it harshly in the past, it needs gentle care now to de-stress and detoxify.

The Bottom Line:

Not all that glitters is gold. I spent thousands (no joke) of dollars on acne skin care and it got me nowhere. It’s funny that later on I discovered that the cheapest, most basic approach helped me more than these overpriced, “specialized”, over-commercialized systems.

Be gentle. Be wise.

I wish you perfect skin,

Love,

Ally

Clear by Paula’s Choice

Reading Paula Begoun’s books taught me quite a few skin savers, like always wearing sunscreen, using BHA/ AHA and not giving into exaggerated advertising campaigns promising the impossible (although the last one is a work in progress).

Being a self-proclaimed perfectionist I decided to put Paula’s own products to the test. Though I’m a huge Paula fan, I am first and foremost a consumer lost in a sea of products promising flawless skin; my only crusade is to find the ultimate product regimen and be as helpful as I can be to fellow crusaders. I would never be biased when it comes to reviwing products, no matter how much I appreciate the maker/ brand/ formulator.

Paula’s website http://www.paulaschoice.com/, showcases mostly raving reviews of the products but granted, as with all products, some reviews are negative and sometimes even brutal. That said, I was pleasantly surprised that the customer service is very quick and accommodating when it comes to getting your money back or receiving consultation regarding your skin care needs. So in the worst case scenario, if the products do not work for you, you can always get your money back without a hassle (and trust me, that’s something to be thankful for!)

So here we go!

This review is for both the Extra Strength Clear system and the Regular Strength one. Hope this helps!

Clear Pore Clarifying Gel:

First thoughts: it was surprisingly gentle. One thing I absolutely love and command Paula for is that her products are fragrance free. And though many customers complain about the odd chemical smelling product, when it comes to smelling nice for five minutes or having beautiful skin in the long run, the choice should be obvious.

I was wearing sunscreen, mascara, eye shadow, foundation and powder and this water soluble cleanser gently dissolved all of it. The consistency is very silky and the smell is pleasant; it doesn’t lather as much as other cleansers, but I don’t think it needs to.

Coming out of the shower my skin felt refreshed. When it was no longer damp, the cleanser left my skin tight but by no means dry. I have fairly sensitive skin and I can’t imagine anyone reacting badly after using this cleanser. That said, if your skin feels dry or itchy, you are most likely allergic to one of the ingredients and needless to say should discontinue the product.

Other than tightening the pores, removing makeup effectively this cleanser did everything as promised and very gently. I think it’s a wonderful cleanser if you have sensitive, oily skin and moderate acne.

Clear Targeted Relief Acne Toner:

Conventionally a toner is an astringent or an alcohol based liquid that tightens your skin, tingles, removes left-over makeup and refreshes. However, this toner was also surprisingly moisturizing.

Instead of being a pure liquid it felt more like a diluted oil. Those of you with oily skin, don’t be alarmed! It felt like oil but quickly absorbed into my skin, calming it and leaving it moisturized. This is something acneic, irritated skin would really benefit from; so many times we use products that have drying cleansers, drying toners and even more drying treatment gels… Paula’s idea of a toner is revolutionary, it’s a moisturizing, softening liquid full of anti-oxidants that has no irritating alcohols in it.

It really is my favourite product from the series.

If you have oily skin and think you need a moisturizer, nothing can be further than the truth. I think all of us would benefit from a moisturizing toner like this one, instead of slathering a creamy moisturizer (particularly if you have oily, acneic skin).

It also includes 2% salicylic acid, so not only is this toner surprisingly moisturizing but it exfoliates and evens out your skin tone (more than any alcohol based toners that just dry and irritate it further).

I tried both the regular strength and the extra strength versions of the toner and found no difference. They both have 2% AHA (salicylic acid) and feel the same on the skin. I think the regular strength one feels less oily, but it might be just me!

Clear Acne Fighting Treatment:

The active ingredient here is the infamous Benzoyl Peroxide. I call it infamous because recently it has received a bad rep from ‘organic’ cosmetic companies deeming BP as an irritating chemical and offering more ‘natural’ alternatives (for example tea tree oil), I should know I’ve been swept into the whole organic/ natural craze until I realized that none of them have been remotely effective. In fact, tea tree oil was the most irritating, drying and painful acne remedy I have ever tried!

The bottom line is that Benzoyl Peroxide has served for decades as an anti-acne aid, and according to research it still is the most effective one (alongside salicylic acid).  Yes, it could be drying if you use too much of it which is why, especially if you have sensitive skin, you should start out with 2.5% and work your way up. Also, only use it as a spot treatment.

The concentration in the extra strength gel is quite strong (5%), it’s lessened in the regular strength (2.5%). I did not find the extra strength too drying (unless you put it all over your face). Both concentrations work wonderfully, but I prefer the extra strength; I dab it on my blemishes and the next day most of them dry up.

Well… Benzoyl Peroxide never fails… So I’m not sure if I should give the credit to Paula’s formulation here :P

Final Thoughts:

It’s a great series. Especially when competeing against harsh systems like Acne-Free, ProActiv, Murad and other expensive but fairly useless and even damaging acne systems.

For the most part it left my skin smoother, more moisturized and definitely clearer! I recommend it for those with oily skin and acne. For those with very sensitive skin, just to be on the safe side, go with the regular strength Clear series. I do have sensitive skin and had no problem with either series, it’s really up to you but I feel they’re equally gentle and effective.

My pores have diminished, my skin is more even toned, moisturized, my acne has cleared very quickly and I haven’t experienced new break-outs.

One thing though, my very oil skin, remains shiny. I’ve grown to deal with it using powder, but if you’re looking for products to really mattify your skin- you probably won’t like the toner.

Final score of ♥♥♥♥♥ out of 5♥.

Hope this helped and if you decide to give Clear a try, I wish you success in achieving perfect skin! :)

Love,

Ally

Hello World!

What made me start this blog?

I was watching a late night infomercial because, as usual, I had trouble sleeping. I was slowly gettign suckered into buying something completely useless even though (a) I had already tried it (b) it didn’t work for me (c) I had no use for it (d) I had no money for it.

Yet the happy shiny-teethed people on the informercial were beckoning me to become one of them, to be successful and worry free, to have more time on my hands, to have perfect skin and smooth, moisturized ankles… How could I not be suckered?!

Maybe last time I hadn’t used it right, I thought to myself. Maybe I had put too much, or too little. Maybe I washed it off too soon, or not soon enough! Did I scrub it vigourously or did I let it absorb? I really couldn’t remember either way. The more I listened to their soothing and reassuring ‘expertise’ the more vague my own experience had become… I began panicking, both about the

time I spent not using this product and perhaps incorrectly and just panicking in general, because watching too many infomercials causes paranoia in the wee hours of the night (I guarantee there must be a study somewhere that proves this!).

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a voice of reason on call every time you need it? Or someone who has been there and done that and can honestly say “honey, this crap don’t work!”

I’m starting to sound like an informercial myself! Yikes!

But what I mean to convey through this silly rant, though the message might be lost, is that I have decided to be that person for myself and others and review as much useless crap as I can get my hands on… saving you the trouble!

On the dock are: (informercial brainwashing material such as) Derma Seta, Sheer Cover, ProActiv, Meaningful Beauty… and many many crappy more, as well as some good stuff that I swear by (like Paula’s Choice).

I used to struggle with moderate acne (and still break out occasionally) I went through piles of useless anti-acne products and lived to tell the tale (and get scars, yay me)!

Any requests are also welcome. Let me spent some money on useless crap so you don’t have to :P

Cheerios,

Ally
